CAMBRIAN COAST

Gors y Gedol Burial Chamber, Signposted just off main road behind the school in Dyffryn Ardudwy, Near Barmouth, Barmouth, Gwynedd, LL44 2DG, Wales.

Two supported capstone lie amongst a bed of small boulders, the base stone is though to have been originally 100 feet long.

At the Northern end of the village in a field South of the petrol station stand two standing stones.

SOUTH EAST WALES

Harold Stones, S of Trellech, On the B4293, Trellech, Monmouthshire, Wales.

Three fingers of rock dating back 3500 years and standing silently in the middle of a field.

Virtuous Well, Off the lane to Tintern, Near Trellech, Trellech, Monmouthshire, Wales.

This had long been a place of pilgrimage due to the well’s reputed healing qualities.

Within the square are a number of interesting sites, including an 18C statue of King Henry V who was born in Monmouth. In front of Shire Hall is a statue of Charles Stewart Rolls, the first man to fly a double flight over the English Channel in 1911.

A dark cave where flint tools that date back over 12 000 years were discovered.

Paviland Cave, Between the villages of Horton & Port Eynon, South Coast Gower Peninsular, Gower, Swansea County, Wales.

In 1823 a skeleton of a stone age hunter that dates back at least 19 000 years was found.

King Arthur’s Stone, 1 mile E of the village of Reynoldston, Reynoldston, Swansea County, Wales.

Follow the path from the car park to King Arthur’s Stone. This is a massive isolated burial chamber capstone that dates from at least 4000BC and weighs over 25 tonnes.

Capstoned burial chamber around 4500 years old. The legend says that anyone who sleeps under the 50 tonne monolith with either die, go mad or become a poet.

SNOWDONIA AND THE LLYN

Capel Garmon Chambered Tomb, On the A5 from Betws-Y-Coed towards Llangollen, Capel Garmon, Gwynedd, Wales.

A reconstructed but very atmospheric multi chambered communal burial site built between 2500-1900BC.

15 stones survive of this Cairn Circle, standing up to six feet tall.

Waterloo Bridge Over the Rover Conwy, Betws-y-Coed, Conwy County, Wales.

Built in 1815 the bridge is complete with emblems of the four countries of the then newly formed Uk. English Rose, Scottish Thistle, Irish Shamrock and Welsh Leek.

NORTH COAST AND ANGLESEY

Admiral Nelson Statute, Near the Britannia Bridge, Overlooking the Menai Strait, Anglesey, Anglesey, Wales.

This statue stands on the shoreline and was erected in 1873 as a navigational aid.

Maen Huail, Outside Barclays Bank, Ruthin, Ruthin, Denbighshire, Wales.

This marks the spot where King Arthur and Huail fought for the same woman. King Arthur was stabbed by Huail in the thigh.They promised never to mention the fight, but Huail could not resist taunting Arthur who consequently had Huail beheaded on this stone.

The world’s first large iron suspension bridge which lies 100 ft above the water.

4000 year old religious site with a well proportioned henge and stone circle, inside one of the chambers is an impressive smooth monolith.

SOUTH WEST WALES

Merlin’s Hill, 1 mile E of Abergwili, Abergwilli, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

The A40 passes the slopes of Merlin’s Hill, where legend has it the famous wizard Merlin lies sleeping under the slopes imprisoned in a cave and waiting for the call to return and help his fellow countrymen.

Many tracks connect a number of ancient sites including; Beddarthur – an eerie stone circle rumoured to be the burial place of many Great Kings., Foeldrygarn – Very impressive Iron Age ramparts and hill circles and Carn Menyn a stone quarry.

The B4319 meets the B4320 at the Devil’s Quoit a Neolithic burial chamber which is topped by an impressive capstone.

Celtic Cross, Carew, Carew, Pembrokeshire, Wales.

Memorial to Maredydd, the ruler of Deheubarth who died in 1035. The cross is remarkably intact and is covered in fine welsh tracery.

CENTRAL WALES

Ffynon Drewllyd, Dol y Coed, 20 miles NW of Brecon, Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, Wales.
A spring named the Stinking Well wells up inside a domed shaped extension in the field behind a spa building and which has the highest sulphur content of any natural source in Brittain.

Eliseg’s Pillar, 400 yards N of Llangollen, On the A542, Llangollen, Powys, Wales.

An eight feet tall pillar erected to a Prince Of Powys in the 9C. The pillar was originally 25 feet tall.
