This is a Neolithic long barrow that dates from around 3000 BC and is the best preserved burial chamber in England. The chamber tombs that housed the remains of 31 Stoneage people have been opened up so that visitors can see inside.

There are no buildings standing at this site, but the grassy mound of Fotheringhay Castle in where Richard III was born in 1452 and Mary Queen Of Scots was executed in 1587, thistles still grow on the site.

Nesscliffe Hill stands in a Country Park surrounded by woods and footpaths, popular with rock climbers. Kynaston Cave is where the highwayman Humphrey Kynaston lived and died after he was outlawed for his debts.

Large well preserved Roman amphitheatre still rises 25 feet above the ground and once held stone terraces and wooden seating for 8000 spectators.

EAST ANGLIA

This grotto extends 67 feet into the hillside, there are passages and six chambers decorated with pebbles, shells, fossils and flints. As this grotto is unlit you would benefit from bringing a torch.

NORTH EAST

Built by the Roman Emperor in 122AD, it stretched from Newcastle to Carlisle. Today only portions of the wall are standing. The most visible remains can be seen between Chollerford and Gilsland within the Northumberland National Park.
