This complete 14C castle was built by Sir John Delamare ( who later became the Sheriff Of Somerset ) using the style of French architects, with a distinct compact tower, and surrounded by a deep moat.

CENTRAL ENGLAND

The castle was built after the Norman Conquest to defend the Welsh Borders but was abandoned in the 16C. It’s most striking feature is the huge grey stone tower on a mound.

Built 1191 all that remains is the banqueting hall and fragment of wall. The banqueting hall has whitewashed walls covered with horse shoes dating back to an ancient custom where dignitaries had to present an ornamental horseshoe when visiting Oakham.
