DUBLIN CITY

SOUTH WEST

Parkavonear Castle, Aghadoe, Killarney, County Kerry, S.I.
Access at all times
The remains of a 13C Round Castle which consist of circular walls to the height of the second level. There would have been further levels but these have now gone.

James Fort, Cross Duggan Bridge, turn left Kinsale, Kinsale, County Cork, S.I.

The fort which is now heavily grass covered has a wealth of secret passageways and panoramic views over Kinsale.

Carrigafoyle Castle, 2 miles N of Ballylongford, Ballylongford, County Kerry, S.I.
Open all year
The castle is protected by the Carrig island and has a vaulted tower, it was once a stronghold of the O’Connors of Kerry and is now uninhabited.

WESTERN

Newtown Castle, Burren College Of Art, Ballyvaughan, County Clare, S.I.
May – Sept Mon-Fri 10.00-16.00
This 16C Towerhouse has been beautifully restored and has some unique architectural features. Free for non guided visits.

Carrigogunnel Castle, Near Clarina, 5 miles W of Limerick, Limerick, County Limerick, S.I.
Access at all times
Known as the rock of the O’Connells, the castle was built between the 14 & 16C and is now in ruins with a collection of isolated towers.

Shanid Castle, South of Shanagolden, On the Ardagh Road, Shanagolden, County Limerick, S.I.

The ruins of a 13C castle that was a former Desmond fortress.

EASTERN

Black Castle, Wicklow, Just outside the town on the seaward side, Wicklow, County Wicklow, S.I

The sparse ruins of this fortification were originally built in 1169 by the Fitzgeralds after the Anglo Saxon invasion. It was almost entirely demolished by the O’Byrnes and the O’Tooles in 1301.

SOUTH EAST

Ferns Castle, At the NW end of the village of Ferns Gorey, Gorey, County Wexford, S.I.
Access at all times
The remains of a castle that date back to 1220, and are thought to stand on the site of Dermot MacMurrough’s old fortress. A complete tower, ruined walls and part of the moat still survive, and the views from the top of the tower are fantastic.

NORTH WEST

Roscommon Castle, Immediately North of the town of Roscommon, Roscommon, County Rosscommon, S.I.
Access at all times
The dramatic and imposing ruins of a castle that was erected in 1280 by Sir Robert de Ufford.
