The gallery was founded in 1908 by wealthy Sir Hugh Lane. The Lane Bequest pictures which form the main exhibition in the gallery contain some important paintings including Manet’s Eva Gonzales, Pissarro’s Printemps, Berthe Morisot’s Joor D’Ete and Renoir.

This building built in 1724 as a customs house and converted into a school of art in 1884. It now houses an excellent permanent collection which includes works by Jack Yeats and Sean Keating as well as works of the British Newlyn and St Ives Schools.
